I recently learned about an amazing program that my friends at Shoppers Drug Mart operate that is all about helping improve women’s health outcomes. I have always been all about self-care, wellness and helping women achieve their goals and the SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. Growing Women’s Health program is so in keeping with that – it’s totally my jam. Let me tell you a bit more.
A Matter of Priorities
You see, as women we often neglect our own health to prioritize others. In fact, the research my friends at Shoppers shared shows that 74% of Canadian women say they put the needs of others ahead of their own. Sound familiar?
That’s why Shoppers gives back to charities that support women’s health. Their 17thannual campaign will support more than 500 unique local women’s health charities in cities and towns across Canada. Your local store even picks a charity within your community, so you can feel good about making a difference locally, where you live.
Giving It All
What I love about Shoppers is that they give 100%. When you donate to SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. Growing Women’s Health in stores between October 6 – November 2, 100% of donations go to the 500+ charities supported. ALL. OF. IT. All of it.It goes right where it’s needed. Every nickel, dime, quarter, loonie, toonie, five through fifty dollar bill, all of it.
This is where you come in
You can join in and purchase a “leaf” for a toonie, a “butterfly” for $5, an “apple” for $10 and a “bird” for $50. These will be displayed for all to see on the Growing Women’s Health Tree in all participating stores. You get to write your name down as someone who is a champion for women’s health.
This year, Shoppers is asking for our help to raise $3.2 million to help fund local women’s health charities across the country. Over the past 16 years, they have raised more than $35 million dollars. I can’t believe I didn’t know this was a thing! I just had to tell you.

How does giving make a difference?
I took some time to chat with the folks at BC Women’s Hospital Foundation, one of the beneficiaries of the program, to ask them how it helps them and what they’re up to.
Here’s what they had to say:
Q: What does being part of the SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU Growing Women’s Health program mean to you?
A: We are so incredibly grateful to Shoppers Drug Mart and their support of women’s health initiatives and investing in women’s health research, both in BC and nationally. There are so few organizations that give back specifically to women – but there is so much research that proves that when we invest in women, there is a significant ripple effect in our communities. When women are healthier, both families and communities are healthier.
Being part of the Growing Women’s Health program raises collective awareness about the importance of women’s health and the reality that gender biases exist in healthcare which negatively impact women. The funding from this campaign is helping up and coming women’s health researchers to develop critical insights into new ways to prevent, treat or cure debilitating women’s health issues – the impacts of this support will improve the delivery of healthcare and enhance the health and wellbeing of women and girls in BC, in Canada, and across the globe.
Q: How can my followers support your organization in a meaningful way?
A: There are many ways to support BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre Foundation. In order for our Foundation to work more effectively in the ways mentioned above – financial support by way of donations are encouraged! Donors can give annually or monthly and support an investment in women’s and newborns health. Attending events is another way to support us and we hold events annually like Sip + Savour on Nov 19th, 2018 and Illuminations Women’s Health Luncheon on January 24, 2019. Finally, following and sharing our content is a great way to stay engaged with all of our work.
Q: What kind of contributions do you envision your organization for the future? What are your big goals?
A: We are going to change the tide on women’s health. The degree to which women are misdiagnosed, misguided, and misunderstood threatens to only further the undeniable gender divide that women face in every facet of our lives – including within healthcare. In a country like Canada that has every conceivable advantage to ensuring our women, newborns and girls enjoy every possible health benefit; we have a long way to go as a nation.
We are already seeing a necessary, prolonged and significantly overdue conversation around gender playing out in every segment of the news cycle, in politics, the arts and in healthcare. We have become further awakened to issues of inequity, and I believe our role is to facilitate the dialogue, to keep it going, and steer health policy toward achieving results which benefit the women and girls of BC.
We know that when women are healthy, the economy benefits, society benefits, families and communities benefit, and our goal is to tackle fundamental women’s health issues with solutions-oriented strategies that leapfrog over systems that marginalize women.
