When I was in school, I was in a lot of choirs. I loved to sing. I did choir, chamber choir, honour choir, vocal jazz, pretty much any kind of groups of people singing was something I wanted in on. Then, I graduated and never did anything with music again. Until one day, I decided I needed more music in my life. That’s when I found Impromptu Rock Choir.
I was doing research for an article about great date nights in Vancouver. Over the course of my research, I came across an event called Impromptu Rock Choir. There are a few locations, but basically, a bunch of people get together and learn to sing fun rock and pop music in harmony.
I love that there’s no commitment because I’m kind of a commitment phobe – you just drop in whenever you feel like it. It was really budget friendly which is helpful for our “don’t spend so much money” resolution. Going out and having fun doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. While I CAN read music, you don’t need to for this, you get to learn by ear so I liked that too.
The other thing I loved about choirs from when I was growing up was the camaraderie. The people we met were really friendly and we didn’t feel like awkward weirdos because it was our first time (well, ok, I always feel awkward, but everyone pretended not to notice or didn’t notice.) Everyone was really welcoming, friendly and nice. Here’s a video of the time we went (my boyfriend is the dude in purple and I’m right beside him):
I definitely recommend Impromptu Rock Choir for people in the lower mainland who want to get more music in their lives outside of the context of their morning shower or when they are stuck in gridlock traffic on the number 1 listening to the radio. I was thinking about wanting to have more fun in 2018 and this is on the top of our list to go back and enjoy. Hope to see you there!
