We went to Theatre Under the Stars, a first for me, and saw Mamma Mia! It was quite the show. The costumes were over the top in the most awesome way. The dancing was fun and amazing. Everyone rolled with the inclement weather, creating the largest gathering of people in plastic ponchos I have ever seen. It was obvious that great care went into the preparation for this show and it was an honour to be invited to see it on opening night.
Mamma Mia! has long been a favourite in our house. We love ABBA and have been known to rock out to Dancing Queen on road trips at random. I’ve seen the movie and the Broadway Across Canada production and seeing it in Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park was truly delightful. We were having a bit of a sad day in our house and this lighthearted production lifted our spirits considerably. The crowd was very excited despite the weather and the energy was incredible. The cast was all great but I thought Peter Monaghan’s rendering of Sam and also Sheryl Wheaton’s Rosie really stole the show with some really lively and emotive performances.
Theatre Under The Stars was really well organized which makes sense since they have been running for 79 glorious years. It was really novel to enjoy musical theatre outdoors for a change. Their staff were friendly, cushions were available for rental and our friends who attended raved about the concession and how iconic it is to enjoy TUTS with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. We definitely plan to return to see Newsies this season and I’m glad I FINALLY got to attend one of these very special shows. Want to see for yourself? Check out all the details here.
