I am an introvert so party planning is fun for me but party attending can take a lot of my people-ing juice. I’ve learned over the years a few strategies to get through the process unscathed for the most part. This is my advice:
I am fortunate in a way that in our family our son has four parents, but this works for two parent families or people with really awesome friends who get how stressful parties can be. Divide tasks between grownups. I am usually responsible for booking the space. Someone else does the invitations. Someone does the goody bags. Someone orders the cakes. Someone is boots on the ground guiding activities (I try to never be that someone because other people host things better than I do.)
Feed The People
Kids who are chewing tend to be quieter, statistically speaking. Make sure there is lots of food. Mouths full of food are less full of words! If you’re an introvert like me and are dreading small talk, jam a whole bunch of food in your mouth. You’re not antisocial, you’re hungry!
Hit The Road!
I am on Team #NoCleanUp – it would probably be cheaper to host at home but then I would have to deep clean my house so basically we go elsewhere always. When all else fails, take your show on the road and you don’t have to worry if someone is going to find a bra wedged in the sofa.
Put On Netflix
If you are at home, put on some Netflix and let them watch a movie together. Children watching movies don’t notice if you forgot to dust the baseboards. There’s also a new feature called Birthdays On Demand so your kid’s favourite character can with them a happy birthday. You can choose from DreamWorks All Hail King Julien, Barbie, Beat Bugs, DreamWorks Dinotrux, Las Leyendas, LEGO Friends, LEGO Ninjago, Luna Petunia, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug* and Cat Noir, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Pokemon, Project Mc2, Skylanders Academy, DreamWorks Trollhunters and Word Party. This is particularly handy if you don’t know any Pokemon personally!
Birthday parties can be a lot of fun, but if you are an introvert like me, some of these strategies will help you get through all the people-ing in one piece. Thank goodness for delegation, snacks, a change of scenery and Netflix!
Disclosure: I am a Netflix StreamTeam member which means Netflix sends me goodies and asks me to write about what we are watching and loving on. All opinions are my own.
